Congressman Mo Brooks Votes to Uphold President Trump Veto of Bill that Would Increase College Costs

Friday, Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) voted to sustain President Trump's veto of H.J.Res. 76, a joint resolution that seeks to reinstate an Obama-era Department of Education rule that would increase costs for American higher education students and undermine their ability to make choices about their education. Congressman Brooks voted against H.J.Res. 76 when it originally came to the House Floor in January 2020.
Fortunately, in a 238-173 vote, Socialist Democrats failed to garner the 2/3rds vote needed to override President Trump's veto.
Congressman Brooks said, "H.J.Res. 76 reinstates an Obama-era Department of Education rule that increases costs for American students and undermines their ability to make choices about their education. The Trump Administration's "Borrower Defense Institutional Accountability' rule prescribes the process by which a borrower may have their federal student loan debt discharged if the institution they attended is found to have committed education fraud."
Brooks concluded, "The Obama-era rule was over broad and resulted in taxpayers picking up the tab for far too much student loan debt. The Trump Administration rule also benefits students by extending the window during which they can qualify for loan discharge and encouraging schools to provide students with opportunities to complete their education."

"American higher education must transform to better meet the needs of today's students. My Administration stands ready to work with the Congress to foster the development of a more affordable, more flexible, and more innovative system of higher education that is better able to meet the educational needs of our students, and in which schools take on more responsibility for the success of the students who enroll in their programs."
"H.J. Res. 76 is a misguided resolution that would increase costs for American students and undermine their ability to make choices about their education in order to best meet their needs."
