Tipton Welcomes More Than $29 Million in PILT Payments to Colorado's Third District

Statement

Date: June 29, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

The U.S. Department of Interior (Interior) today announced Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) for 2020. The annual payments, made to primarily rural communities whose jurisdictions incorporate tax-exempt federal lands administered by Interior, are used to pay for critical services such as emergency response, public schools, housing and other social services and infrastructure. Funds for PILT are collected from various activities on the lands including grazing, oil and gas leasing, and timber harvesting. Congressman Tipton (CO-03) welcomed the announcement and provided the following statement:

"Colorado's Third District is fortunate to have abundant public spaces for recreation and shared use, but given that many of these areas are non-taxable, a lack of tax revenue places significant budgetary constraints on rural areas. PILT plays a critical role to help these communities bridge budgetary challenges and I look forward to these funds being used to support essential infrastructure and services that would likely not exist without this money."

There are more than 18.2 million acres of tax-exempt land in Colorado's Third District which will receive $29.27 million in PILT for 2020.
