The juvenile justice system in the state of Nebraska has failed too many Nebraskan youths over the years especially youth that resides in District 11. As your state senator, I will work tirelessly to transform the juvenile justice system in the state of Nebraska. By addressing the programming issues in the juvenile justice system from the grassroots. There is a clear lack of proactive measures in the juvenile justice system. Resources need to be allocated to grassroots organizations and family support groups that are doing the work but are being underfunded. We need to also support families holistically and establish community safety nets to catch juveniles before any need for law enforcement contact and detention. I will also create a state mandate to require recurring cultural competency and race equity training for all state and county administrative, prosecutorial, defense, facility, and programming staff. Most importantly we need to find alternatives to detaining youth accused of non-violent offenses like community-based alternatives. Lastly, I will enact legislation that gives the state more oversight on county and city decisions on juvenile justice.
