Sinema Calls for Continued Health Care Protections for Millions of Arizonans During Coronavirus Pandemic

Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema is calling on the Department of Justice to defend legal protections for Arizonans with pre-existing health conditions before the Supreme Court--so over 2.8 million Arizonans can keep health care protections for pre-existing conditions during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"As coronavirus cases continue to spike, ensuring Arizonans with pre-existing conditions have access to critical health care protections will save lives," said Sinema.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear a case on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act in its next term. Last year, the Department of Justice announced it would not defend the ACA in federal court, and on June 25, 2020, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Justice filed briefs with the Supreme Court urging that it strike down the ACA.

Sinema is calling on the Department of Justice to reverse its position and defend the ACA before the Supreme Court. If the ACA is overturned, 297,000 Arizonans will lose their health care coverage and over 2.8 million Arizonans will lose critical health care protections for pre-existing conditions.
