Shimkus Reveals Federal Grant for Charleston Firefighters

Press Release

More than $17,000 is headed to the city of Charleston through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program, Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) has announced. The federal money will allow the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) and related supplies for Charleston firefighters.

The grant, totaling $17,190.65, comes from special COVID-19 supplemental funding that was part of the CARES Act passed by Congress and signed by President Donald Trump in March. The CARES Act set aside $100 million specifically for the purchase of PPE and supplies to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

"I am pleased that another fire department in the 15th Congressional District has been successful in obtaining an AFG grant," Shimkus said. "This round of funding is particularly important, coming amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which has put even more emphasis on the safety aspect of the jobs of first responders."

The AFG Program is administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
