Jenniffer Gonzalez Announces $ 22.6 Million for Canóvanas, Head Start, Health and Domestic Violence

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón announced the approval of $ 22,633,259 in federal funds allocated by various offices of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the federal Department of Justice (DOJ) for health services, for childcare services, research and to combat domestic violence.

The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) allocated $ 12,025,000 to the Addiction and Mental Health Services Administration for the Puerto Rico State Opioid Response (SOR) Grant project.

The Municipality of Canóvanas will receive $ 429,974 from the HHS Administration for Children and Families under the funds from Disaster Assistance to Head Start Centers under the category of social services.

The United States Department of Health and Human Services, through the Administration for Children and Families, allocated $ 1,707,125 in federal funds to the SHS Diocese of Mayagüez Family Development Center and $ 2,977,501 to the Center for Youth Services, Inc. within the category Social Services for Early Head Start.

These funds allocated for Head Start are final and only the date of their disbursement by the agency remains pending, which varies depending on the program.

The Ponce University of Medicine will receive $ 432,554 in federal funds allocated by the National Cancer Institute for the project "Adrenergic signaling inhibition to enhance the immunogenicity of the ovarian tumor microenvironment prior to PD-1 checkpoint therapy" for research in cancer biology.

The Institute of General Medical Sciences allocated $ 307,561 to the University of Puerto Rico Cayey Campus as part of the METAS + program: "Maintaining, Engaging, and Tracking Alumni in Science and Health Research" in the category of research projects.

As part of the funds allocated by HHS by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention / CDC-NCIPC National Center for Injury Prevention & Control (CE), Hogar Crea Inc. will receive $ 125,000 for the "Hogar Crea Drug Free Community Coalition "In the category of health services.

The Puerto Rico Department of Health will receive $ 2,470,076 under funds allocated by HHS within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention / CDC -OSTLTS Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support (OT) program for preventive health and services of health.

Similarly, ACRES, INC -Agriculture with Rural, Ecological and Sustainable Conscience will receive $ 125,000 under the funds assigned by HHS within the program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention / CDC-NCIPC National Center for Injury Prevention & Control (CE ) for the Lomas Community Prevention Coalition program in the category of health services to maintain drug-free communities.

The HHS Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) allocated $ 200,000 in federal funds to the Migrant Health Center, Western Region, Inc. for the "Rural Communities Opioid Response (Planning)" program.

The National Institute of Mental Health allocated $ 750,468 to the Ponce School of Medicine as part of the "Reducing Serious Mental Illness and Suicide Stigma Among Medical Students" program for research related to mental health.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism allocated $ 333,000 to the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico for the project "MiR-9 regulation of beta-catenin mediated alcohol tolerance and EtOH consumption" under the use research program of alcohol.

Additionally, the federal Department of Justice (DOJ) under the program to reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and harassment of women in rural areas allocated $ 750,000 to Hogar Nueva Mujer SMDLM, Inc. The program offers services to victims of violence in rural areas to help with counseling, legal assistance, and a safe place to stay, among others.
