Shaheen, Lawmakers Introduce Legislation to Honor Justice Ginsburg with a Monument in the Capitol

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) joined U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and a bicameral group of lawmakers to introduce legislation that would honor Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's service and dedication to the United States by establishing a monument in the U.S. Capitol Complex.

"Justice Ginsburg lived a life of purpose and unrelenting resolve that advanced the rights of disenfranchised Americans. Her legacy is intertwined with some of our nation's proudest moments, including her trailblazing work as a champion for women's rights and as a fierce proponent for securing and safeguarding civil liberties for LGBTQ Americans," said Shaheen. "Her passing is a tremendous loss for our judicial system. Establishing a monument in her likeness is a fitting tribute to Justice Ginsburg and the causes that she fervently fought for."

The bill requires the Joint Committee of Congress on the Library (JCL), in consultation with the Senate Rules Committee and the Committee on House Administration, to procure a monument that honors Justice Ginsburg within 2 years of the enactment of the legislation. In honor of Justice Ginsburg's legacy, the legislation also requires the JCL to consider selecting an artist from underrepresented demographic groups to create the monument. Presently, there are five sculptures and one painting honoring former Supreme Court Justices in the Capitol.
