ONEONTA, NY -- During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, U.S. Representative Antonio Delgado (NY-19) visited Opportunities for Otsego to learn more about the organization's facilities for domestic violence survivors and the services offered through their Violence Intervention Program. In September, Rep. Delgado announced $475,000 in federal funding for the Transitional Housing Assistance Program from the Office on Violence Against Women within the Department of Justice.

"October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and it has never been more important to support essential organizations in our region that provide survivors of domestic violence with safe housing and the tools required to get back on their feet," said Rep. Delgado. "It was an honor to join the hardworking staff at Opportunities for Otsego today and learn how they are utilizing a new federal grant to expand housing options and supplement their support services for the most vulnerable in our society. I'll keep advocating at the federal level to ensure organizations that are working to end poverty in our rural communities have the resources required to provide for those most in need during these challenging times."

Dan Maskin, Chief Executive Officer, Opportunities for Otsego said, "we were honored to talk about the Transitional Housing Grant and the plight of the homeless in Otsego County. Congressman Delgado's support of Opportunities for Otsego and, more importantly, the concerns of low income families in our community, means so much to the people we serve every day."

In September, Rep. Delgado announced a grant award that will provide funding for 42 residences for survivors and their families through private landlord housing units. The grant also allows Opportunities for Otsego, in partnership with the Otsego County Department of Social Services, to expand their resources to assist victims of domestic violence through rental and utility subsidies, career and financial counseling, and other supportive services.

Last Fall, during his in-district work week focused on affordable housing, Rep. Delgado held a roundtable at Opportunities for Otsego with members of their board of directors, senior staff, and Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig to discuss their work to combat poverty and assist low-income communities in Otsego County.
