Issue Position: Diversifying the Economy

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

Despite its economic benefits, Hawaii's dependence on tourism as its main economic driver is no longer sustainable for our environment and our cost of living. Hawaiʻi must rise above a tourist destination, becoming a nexus for global innovation.

This means making sure the State is actively encouraging the growth of innovative industries that can provide high-wage job opportunities for Hawaii's residents and be respectful of our environment, giving future generations the option to call Hawai'i home. As Representative, I will work hard to encourage promising research and its commercialization through coordination with the University of Hawaiʻi and the private sector, establish secure broadband connections across the islands, and promote the development and innovation of renewable energy technology.

In 1971, the University of Hawaiʻi created the ALOHAnet, a networking system that would be the foundation for the modern internet[2]. It's time for Hawaiʻi to lead again in innovation, securing varied economic opportunities and stable industries across sectors so that our communities can thrive across the islands.
