Issue Position: Adapting to Climate Change

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020
Issues: Environment

With every passing year, we see the corrosive effects of climate change in Hawaiʻi: unbearably hot summers, eroding beaches, and bleached coral reefs.

We must act quickly to preserve our natural environment and protect our communities from impending natural disasters. But this doesn't mean we can neglect to involve our communities in working to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. If elected, I will work hard to ensure community involvement in preventative measures like the Ala Wai Flood Risk Management Project.

The best disaster preparedness also begins with strong and well-connected neighborhoods. When disaster hits, close relationships between neighbors can save lives because we know who the most vulnerable members of our communities are and how to help them.

We are not helpless, even in the face of global climate change. And we can start building our resilience in the face of it with actions large and small today.
