Issue Position: Stabilize the Budget and Provide Tax Relief for Hardworking Kansans

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

We need to continue stabilizing the state budget following Brownback's failed tax experiment. Lindsay supports Governor Kelly's vision of a fiscally responsible, fair, and sustainable tax policy. This means returning to the three-legged stool approach that sensibly balances income, sales, and property tax revenue and stopping the diversion of KDOT and KPERS funds to other parts of the government.

As the budget stabilizes, we must reduce or eliminate the sales tax on food and return property taxes back to local communities. Lindsay supports legislation like Governor Kelly's property tax relief program, which would have provided $54 million to local governments to offset their reliance on property taxes. Lower property taxes will lead to more affordable housing options. This is critical in Johnson County, so our young people stay, seniors can age in place, and our teachers and public safety officers can afford to live where they work.
