Chairman Scott Statement on Supreme Court Oral Arguments on the Fate of the Affordable Care Act

Committee on Education and Labor Chairman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) released the following statement on today's arguments in the California v. Texas case before the Supreme Court.

"As we continue to confront the worst public health emergency in recent history, our first priority must be to protect Americans' health and wellbeing. Yet, today, in the midst of a global health pandemic, a group of Republican Attorneys General are arguing to the Supreme Court that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) should be struck down.

"If they are successful, all of the benefits of the ACA could be lost, and millions of Americans would suffer. This could mean tens of millions of people could lose their insurance, people with pre-existing conditions could be denied coverage, children on their parent's insurance could lose their coverage access, and so much more.

"It is completely reckless and irresponsible for Republicans to advocate for the repeal of such a critical piece of legislation, especially as COVID-19 cases surge in nearly every state across the country. For our part, House Democrats will continue to fight to protect these lifesaving protections from partisan attacks and will work to ensure everyone has access to quality, affordable health care."
