Issue Position: LGBTQ+ Advocacy and Protection

Issue Position

Banning Conversion Therapy for Minors
Issue
Despite its dangerousness and the fact that there is no credible evidence that conversion therapy can change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity or expression, up until very recently, conversion therapy was not banned in Massachusetts. These practices harm our LGTBQ+ community -- research has clearly shown that these practices pose devastating health risks for LGBTQ young people such as depression, decreased self-esteem, substance abuse, homelessness, and even suicidal behavior. The harmful practice is condemned by every major medical and mental health organization, including the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and American Medical Association.

Christine's Plan
I was happy to vote with my colleagues to make Massachusetts the 16th State to ban this practice in March 2019.

Protections for the Transgender Community
Issue
Regardless of the strides that we have made in expanding civil rights protections, too often, our Transgender neighbors are left behind. I will always advocate for the needs of their community and will continue to work on issues that will make Massachusetts a safe place for everyone, regardless of gender identity.

Christine's Plan
I was so proud to vote for the Transgender Public Accommodations bill in 2016. I gave my first ever speech on the House floor to rally support and speak on why it is so important to fight for our most vulnerable. I also supported the efforts to defeat the transphobic ballot measure in 2018 that would have vetoed that vote.
