Date: Dec. 1, 2020
Location: Columbus, GA

Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), Chairman of the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies, released the following statement in support of Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) as a candidate for the Secretary of Agriculture in the Biden Administration:

"President-Elect Biden has said he wants his administration to reflect the highest level of competence while being inclusive of the diversity that is the strength of America. I believe Representative Fudge would be a great Secretary of Agriculture because of her high level of competence in that space.

"She is cognizant of the needs of our farmers and the many challenges they face in producing and marketing their product at home and abroad. She is passionate about assuring that rural America receives much needed attention and resources such as Internet, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development opportunities. She is committed to assuring that every American, rural or urban, has access to the highest-quality, safest, most abundant, and most economical food and fiber in the world.

"She is smart, disciplined, innovative and has the administrative, communication, and political skills to implement the Administration's policies through USDA that will move our country safely through the pandemic; help America's families, businesses, and communities recover; and lead our country into a bright new era of hope and prosperity.

"I have every confidence that President-Elect Biden will make the appropriate choice to lead the agency and as Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Development Subcommittee on Appropriations, I look forward to working with whomever is confirmed."
