Diaz-Balart Secures $5.35 Million in Defense Spending Bill
WASHINGTONCongressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) today announced numerous projects he was able to include in the Department of Defense spending package.
"As our men and women of our military continue to win the War on Terror, we need to ensure that they are able to defeat the threats of today and defend against the threats of tomorrow," Diaz-Balart said. "These projects provide the resources needed to fight terrorism, improve readiness and modernize our military infrastructure."

$2,500,000 for the Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) at the University of Miami for spaced-based satellite synthetic aperture radar systems to provide area-wide surveillance capabilities. It will assist U.S. SOUTHCOM with drug interdiction and homeland security; monitor targets' movement on land or ocean; map topography with unprecedented accuracy; assess storm and flood damage; track local forest and wildfires; and help scientists forecast major volcanic eruptions.

$1,250,000 for the Western Hemisphere Information Exchange (WHIX) program at Florida International University and the Department of the Army to increase its readiness and military interoperability by encouraging improved capability and willingness on the part of Western Hemisphere allies to operate in coalitions, with the U.S. military.

$1,000,000 for the University of Miami William Lehman Injury Research Center/Ryder Trauma Center to develop and evaluate new and innovative diagnostic and treatment tools and point-of-care information systems to maximize the care of injured soldiers.

$600,000 for Miami Dade County for Homestead Air Reserve Base Perimeter Improvement to improve the perimeter of the Homestead Air Reserve Base (HARB) by constructing a security fence and clearing the land transferred to the County by the federal government.
