Amata Takes Oath Of Office In 117th Congress

Press Release

Date: Jan. 3, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Sunday, Congresswoman High Chief Uifaatali was officially sworn in to serve the people of American Samoa for a fourth term in Congress as the new 117th Congress convened.

"At the start of each Congress, each Member swears an oath to the U.S. Constitution," said Amata. "It's a humbling moment that reminds us of our responsibility to the people we represent. I'm always proud to represent American Samoa in Washington."

Congresswoman Amata placed her hand on a Bible and swore to protect and defend the Constitution. Due to Covid precautions, this year honored guests were not invited to the U.S. Capitol as in past years. Two years ago, Amata appreciated being able to be sworn in with Reverend Apisaloma Toleafoa of the First Samoan Congregational Christian Church in Alexandria, VA, there to hold the Bible for the occasion, accompanied by his Faletua, FL Tina Lora Faalevao Toleafoa.

"This is my fourth time, and the experience was a little different for this one, as we moved in small groups to follow CDC guidelines of social distancing," Amata said. "I think that serves as an additional reminder of Congress's responsibility in serious times."

"Congress is even more narrowly divided now, and everything that has a chance to pass into law must be bipartisan," Amata concluded. "There will be strong disagreements at times, but overall, I hope to see a productive two years. As always, my priority will be to make American Samoa's needs known, and ensure we can depend on equitable consideration in all areas of federal support."
