Hill Applauds the Advancement of the Mayflower Overpass Project

Statement

Date: Nov. 4, 2020
Location: Little Rock, AR
Issues: Transportation

Today, after the Arkansas Department of Transportation opened bids for the Mayflower Overpass as part of their November letting, Congressman Hill released the following joint statement with Mayflower Mayor Randy Holland:

"I am pleased that bids are being considered for the Mayflower Overpass. This a big step toward a safer Mayflower, as well as facilitating growth and anchoring Mayflower to the Cabot Highway 89 corridor," said Congressman Hill. "I look forward to continuing to work with Mayor Randy Holland, the Arkansas Department of Transportation, and local leaders on this important infrastructure project."

"This project has been in the works for many years and I am so excited that it is now becoming a reality. The overpass will provide much needed public safety and will boost Economic Development Growth for the community. It will change Mayflower for the better, forever," said Mayor Holland. "I want to thank Congressman French Hill, Metroplan, and Faulkner County Judge Jim Baker for their support."

Background on the Mayflower Highway 89 Overpass:

After completion, Highway 89 will establish a corridor to better assist with the traffic flow, help first responders better respond to emergencies at locations that are currently difficult to access, and help boost central Arkansas's economy.

The construction of the overpass will increase the flow of traffic over the railroad. The current railroad crossing is a safety hazard as it blocks traffic, including emergency vehicles, for nearly an hour at times.

Project Timeline:

July 24, 2018: The Mayflower City Council passed Resolution 2018-09, granting the City of Mayflower a partnership with Metroplan, ArDOT, and Faulkner County to finance the construction of the Hwy 89 railroad overpass realignment.

July 17, 2018: The Faulkner County Quorum Court passed Resolution 18-04, appropriating funds to begin construction of the Highway 89 railroad overpass realignment. Along with Faulkner County, ArDOT and Metroplan will also finance part of the project, drastically reducing Mayflower's share.

April 6th, 2018: The AHTD held a public hearing to discuss three options for the Highway 89 Improvement Project, and the location of the railroad overpass. Three alternatives were presented, with one alternative recommended by the AHTD.

Public input and comments were collected at the hearings until Friday, May 5th, 2017.
