House Passes Bill Authorizing New Measures to Stop Asian Carp

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed legislation authorizing the Army Corps of Engineers to construct additional obstacles at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam in Illinois that would prevent the spread of Asian carp.

The legislation also increases the percentage of funding in the national Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund that must go towards the Great Lakes, from 10 percent to 13 percent.

"Every Michigan resident loves the Great Lakes and this legislation will help protect the Lakes for future generations with more funding for our harbors and progress in preventing Asian carp," said Congressman John Moolenaar.

The legislation authorizes construction of additional barriers at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam as outlined in a report completed by the Army Corps of Engineers last year. The additional measures include an electric barrier, an engineered channel, a lock, and sound deterrents to the fish. More details are available here.
