DeLauro Secures Critical Protections for Children against E-Cigarettes in the Federal Spending Package

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Chair of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, secured the historic inclusion of her legislation, the Preventing Online Sales of E-Cigarettes Act, in the fiscal year 2021 spending bill. The legislation would require in-person age verification upon delivery of online purchases of e-cigarette and vaping products.

"The inclusion of these critical protections against the online sale of e-cigarettes to children will prevent countless illnesses and save lives," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "This bill's enactment will mark the end of a battle I have fought to close the loophole that allows online e-cigarette vendors to sell to customers without verifying their age at the point of delivery. This is another critical step to ending the youth vaping epidemic, one of the many challenges worsened by the spread of COVID-19. I look forward to this legislation passing both the House and the Senate and to the President enacting these much-needed protections."

DeLauro first introduced this legislation in 2015. In October 2019, DeLauro held a hearing in the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee on the emerging public health threat of e-cigarettes. More information and a video of her hearing can be found here.
