U.S. Rep. Lawrence Statement on Potential Ban of Open Carry of Firearms in Michigan Capitol amid Recent Attacks in Washington D.C.

U.S. Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14) issued the following statement after Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey said he would support a ban on the open carry of firearms within the Michigan Capitol, which comes days after the U.S. Capitol came under siege from violent insurgents. Last year, armed protesters stormed the state Capitol building in Lansing and threatened the governor over COVID safety orders. On Thursday, following the events in Washington D.C., a bomb threat was made on the Michigan Capitol, requiring all lawmakers and staff to evacuate the facility.

"This week, Michigan and the rest of the country saw what happens when our leaders allow their political agenda to take over their Oath of Office. I was on the floor when the violent mob was beating on the chamber doors to get to the Members of Congress. Every Democratic and Republican member, our staff, Capitol workers, and Capitol Police Officers were at risk.

"It's sad that it took this violent event to wake everyone up. While banning open carry at the Michigan State Capitol is long overdue, it should go even further and include the concealed carry of firearms as well. It is essential to protect the safety of our lawmakers and staff that work there. As elected officials, we all have a responsibility and obligation to protect the people and our government, and this ban would be a step in the right direction to do just that."
