Adams Introduces Resolution Celebrating Women & Girls in Science

Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12) introduced a resolution expressing the sense of Congress that February 11, 2021, be observed as the 6th annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

"The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an important opportunity for each of us to recognize the many contributions women have made to science, while also shining a spotlight on the need for more equitable access to STEM education and employment for women worldwide," said Congresswoman Adams. "Women scientists -- from Katherine Johnson to North Carolina's own Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett -- have made ground-breaking discoveries and invented new technologies, changing the face of STEM fields and informing the world's response to major crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, globally, less than 30 percent of researchers are women, in no small part due to continued gender-based discrimination and bias. That's why this day, and the fight for greater representation for women and girls in science, remains so important."

The United Nations General Assembly established the annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated annually on February 11th, to recognize the critical role women and girls play in science and technology, in December 2015. This year's celebration will address the theme "Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19."

Rep. Adams' office is pleased to participate in the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program, which supports accomplished K-12 educators in STEM fields serving in the national education arena, hosting Dr. Jennifer Stimpson, a veteran science teacher with the Hockaday School in Dallas, TX.

Congresswoman Alma Adams represents North Carolina's 12th Congressional District (Charlotte, Mecklenburg County). She serves on the House Financial Services Committee, on the House Committee on Education and Labor as the chair of the Workforce Protections subcommittee, and on the House Agriculture Committee as Vice Chair.
