Butterfield Statement on U.S. Senate Vote to Acquit Donald Trump of Inciting January 6th Insurrection

Today, Congressman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) released the following statement on the 57-43 vote by the U.S. Senate that failed to convict Donald J. Trump of the article of impeachment charging him with incitement of insurrection over the January 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol:

"I am disappointed that the Senate failed to convict former President Donald J. Trump of inciting the mob that attacked the Capitol and our Democracy. Donald Trump placed his thirst for power ahead of the Constitution. He incited the insurrection and political violence that took place on January 6th," said Congressman Butterfield. "Forty-three Republican senators chose to defend a man and their political futures over their solemn oath to defend the Constitution and protect our Democracy. I commend the seven Republican Senators, including Senator Richard Burr, for their votes of conscience. I regret that Republican Leader Mitch McConnell failed to vote for conviction in light of his candid remarks following the trial that President Donald Trump was responsible for the attack on the Capitol."
