Location: Flint, MI

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, has co-sponsored legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the officers of the U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement personnel who protected the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest honor that Congress can bestow expressing national appreciation for distinguished achievements or contributions to individuals, institutions or events. Both Chambers of Congress--including the U.S. House and Senate--must enact legislation by a two-thirds majority to award the honor.

"The valor, patriotism and heroism of law enforcement to defend our democracy on January 6th deserves our appreciation," Congressman Kildee said. "I am honored to introduce this legislation to honor the officers of the Capitol Police and other law enforcement, some who gave the ultimate sacrifice, to defend the U.S. Capitol against insurrection. We must never forget the sacrifice of Officer Brian Sicknick, Officer Howard Liebengood, Officer Jeffrey Smith and the more than 140 law enforcement officers who sustained physical injuries on that terrible day."
