Duckworth Applauds Biden Administration's New Usps Board Appointments, Reiterates Call for Accountability for All Board Members Who Permitted Dejoy's Disastrous Decisions

U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today released the following statement after the Biden Administration announced it would appoint three new members to fill the vacancies on the United States Postal Service (USPS) Board of Governors:

"I commend President Biden for selecting three qualified, independent individuals to serve on the USPS Board of Governors. This is a positive first step toward restoring some balance and integrity at the Board of Governors. Yet, in order to truly build back public trust in this vital agency, President Biden must replace all members of the board who looked the other way when DeJoy implemented and accelerated devastating policies that caused widespread delays and system-wide backlogs. These bottlenecks put Veterans and adults at risk of not receiving their lifesaving prescriptions on time, hardworking families at risk of missing their paychecks and small business at risk of not receiving critical supplies when they needed them. We must have accountability for this failure in leadership in order to help ensure that the USPS is robust, efficient and sustainable for future generations."

Earlier this month, Duckworth urged the Biden Administration to replace every member of the USPS Board of Governors who permitted Dejoy's disastrous decisions and for the Administration to nominate leadership. In August of last year, Duckworth and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) convened a call with USPS and Illinois State Board of Elections leaders to discuss how constituents in Illinois can safely participate in the upcoming general election amid concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and USPS policies and practices that may impact mail-in ballot delivery. Shortly after that call, Duckworth and Durbin urged USPS to prioritize election mail ahead of the November general election.
