Location: Washington, DC

House Armed Services Committee Vice Chair Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), a 30-year Army veteran, released the following statement on the selection of General Lloyd Austin to be the next Secretary of Defense:

"Gen Lloyd Austin has the character and competence necessary to lead the Department of Defense. President-elect Joe Biden's decision to nominate him is both historic and significant. I've worked closely with Gen. Austin and personally witnessed his deep understanding and close relationships with civilian and military personnel. He's a dedicated patriot, decorated leader and strategic thinker ready to confront the many national security threats facing our country. Tested and respected, he will advance the security, prosperity and values of the United States.

"As the first Black Secretary of Defense, Gen. Austin - who has broken barriers throughout his career - would lead the most diverse military in our nation's history. President-elect Biden and Gen. Austin will restore the trust that has frayed between the military and the people they serve. Both understand that civilian leadership, authority and control of the military is vitally important to the strength of our democracy. Gen. Austin has the trust of our new Commander in Chief and should be vetted on his exemplary record of service to our country and his vision to keep us safe at home and abroad. I look forward to supporting and working with him.
