Rosen Votes to Convict Former President Trump

Statement

Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement after voting to convict former President Trump at the conclusion of the impeachment proceedings:

"After participating in this week's impeachment trial and assessing the evidence presented by both parties, I voted to convict former President Donald J. Trump for inciting a violent insurrection against the United States Congress," said Senator Rosen. "The Senate held a fair trial and the House Managers presented an argument that was clear and compelling. They proved that former President Trump spent months delegitimizing the election results and intentionally inciting anger and hatred among many of his supporters, and then invited these same agitators to a rally he hosted in Washington on January 6, before directing them to march on the Capitol with specific instructions to stop the certification of the election. Furthermore, once the Capitol was under siege, the evidence showed that, despite ample opportunity to intervene to stop the violent rioters and save lives, the President failed to take action to defend the Capitol, his Vice President, law enforcement, or our democracy. There must be consequences when a former President incites deadly violence against a coequal branch of government.

"The Constitution requires two-thirds of the Senate to vote to convict. Although we did not reach that threshold, a majority of my colleagues voted to convict former President Trump, the most bipartisan vote to convict in a presidential impeachment trial in history," Senator Rosen continued. "Now, we must focus on our work to rebuild our country, strengthen our democratic institutions, and recover from the pandemic. I will continue to do everything in my power to make sure our country and democracy are protected."
