Burgess: Election should be for the people not the politicians

Statement

Date: March 3, 2021
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Elections

Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), released the following statement after voting against H.R. 1.

"It is disappointing that the Democrats are more concerned about keeping their jobs than allowing the American people to decide who holds these sacred offices," said Burgess. "Congress should be wary of allotting so much influence to the Federal Government in the determination of our elections.

"There are problems within our election system that need to be reformed. Many of those issues must be handled on the state level. When it comes to making reforms, the Federal Government should be working to protect American voters and free speech. Instead, this legislation removes states' authority to oversee their elections and places it in the hands of Washington, creates a speech czar, and allows for taxpayer dollars to fund campaigns.

"We need to be working to restore faith in our election system, not demolish it."
