Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said that the second impeachment trial of former President Trump, which starts today, underscores the need for District of Columbia statehood, which would give the District the right to vote on impeachment and conviction in impeachment proceedings.

"D.C. will not have a vote in the impeachment trial of former President Trump," Norton said. "This historic trial reinforces the need for statehood for the District of Columbia. The 712,000+ residents of our nation's capital should have a say in this decision, particularly considering that the insurrection on January 6 affected our city the most. I will continue advocating for D.C. statehood."

Norton reintroduced her D.C. statehood bill last month with a record number of original cosponsors (202), and the bill now has 210 cosponsors. Last year, the House overwhelmingly passed the bill, which was the first time either chamber had ever passed the bill.

In addition to her support for Trump's impeachment and conviction, including barring Trump from holding office again, Norton has introduced a resolution that would censure Trump for attempting to overturn the presidential election through unlawful means and for inciting insurrection.
