Majority Whip Clyburn Remarks on House Passage of Two Background Checks Bills

Statement

Date: March 11, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn issued the following statement today on House passage of H.R. 8, The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021 and H.R. 1446, The Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021:

"I am pleased by the House votes today in support of common-sense measures to close loopholes that have enabled the transfer of weapons to people who are not eligible to own them. The passage of these two landmark pieces of legislation responds to the concerns of more than 90 percent of the American people, including many gunowners, who support background checks before the sale of firearms."

"I am emotional today for the families and friends of the Emanuel Nine, several of who were my constituents. They have been waiting for years to see the "Charleston loophole' closed. Today's vote moves us one step closer to making gun ownership safer."

"These important background check bills garnered bipartisan support in the House, and I hope the Senate will follow our lead and send these lifesaving bills to President Biden's desk to be signed into law."
