U.S. Representative Jake LaTurner Will Vote Against Democrats' Partisan Election Bill

Statement

Date: March 3, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Jake LaTurner released the following statement on H.R. 1:

"H.R. 1, the so-called "For the People Act," is a sweeping federal rewrite of our election system which, if signed into law, would further threaten both the integrity of our elections and Americans' right to political free speech," said LaTurner. "H.R. 1 massively expands mail-in voting and ballot harvesting, forces States to allow Election Day voter registration, bans voter identification requirements, and ends meaningful signature verification, all provisions which would encourage voter fraud."

"H.R. 1 would consolidate election regulation under the federal government, contrary to the system of state-controlled elections outlined in our Constitution. This bill would also use tax dollars to fund federal political campaigns -- so voters would be forced to support the candidacy of politicians with whom they disagree."

"This bill also tramples on the First Amendment freedoms of all Americans through thinly-veiled attempts to expose the personal information of political donors so that Democrat activists can target conservatives. I have always and will continue to fight for election security, local control, and free speech. This bill violates all of these fundamental principles."
