WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today voted to pass the American Dream and Promise Act (H.R. 6), a bill to protect Dreamers and other immigrants with deep ties to local communities and economies throughout the country.

The legislation would create a 10-year path for Dreamers -- individuals who came to the United States as young children -- to earn lawful permanent resident (LPR) status. It would also allow Temporary Protected Status holders and Deferred Enforced Departure recipients to apply for LPR status. Under the American Dream and Promise Act, Dreamers with at least five years of full LPR status could apply for American citizenship.

"Today, I voted to provide critical protections for immigrants in Maryland and across the United States who make incredible contributions to our economy and society," said Congressman Sarbanes. "The American Dream and Promise Act reinforces our nation's core values and honors our rich history of welcoming immigrants -- like my grandparents from Greece -- whose diversity and hard work help our country prosper."
