Durbin Meets Virtually With International Alliance Of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 2 To Discuss Benefits In The American Rescue Plan

SPRINGFIELD -- U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) spoke virtually with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 2, which represents stagehands and theater workers, to discuss the American Rescue Plan (ARP) and its benefits for working families and organized labor.

"Millions of working Americans have lost their jobs and health care coverage during this pandemic, including those who depend on the entertainment industry. In many instances, some are still unable to work. That's why Congressional Democrats worked hard to pass the American Rescue Plan and provide some relief for those still struggling," Durbin said. "As someone who grew up in a union household, I will always support workers in Congress, and continue to fight on behalf of all they do to support the American economy."

The ARP extended unemployment programs through September 6, including $300 per week enhanced benefits. The ARP also included a provision based on Durbin's Coronavirus Unemployment Benefits Tax Relief Act that excludes the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits from federal income taxes for 2020.

Since March of 2020, an estimated 10 to 15 million Americans have lost their employer-sponsored health insurance due to unemployment. The ARP also included provisions from Durbin's Worker Health Coverage Protection Act, ensuring that people who lost their employer-sponsored health insurance due to unemployment can remain on their employer health plan through COBRA for free until the end of September 2021.
