Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), a 30-year Army veteran and senior Black member on the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement praising President Joe Biden's implementation of protections for transgender servicemembers on Transgender Day of Visibility:

"I applaud President Biden and Secretary Austin for taking action to ensure that transgender Americans can freely and openly serve our country in their self-identified gender and know that our military will support them through their transition.

"Our military is strengthened by our diversity and by Americans of all backgrounds coming together to protect the country we all love. Every American who wants to and can serve their country in uniform should be able to do so without fear and without hiding who they are. Transgender servicemembers have and will continue to bravely serve within the ranks of our military. The previous administration's bigoted actions targeted those who have sacrificed so much to defend our nation, simply for being who they are. President Biden's actions today once again affirms not only their service to our country, but also their identities and their equal rights as Americans."
