Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), a senior Black member on the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement on the Biden administration plans to request $715 billion for the Department of Defense's FY22 budget:

"We ask more of our military than ever before. President Biden's defense budget reflects the realities of global security, the need to take care of those who answer the call of service and the benefits of investing in our defense to every sector of our economy.

"A robust defense budget allows the United States and our allies to collectively maintain necessary levels of deterrence for peace and stability against revisionist powers such as China and Russia, rogue actors like North Korea and Iran and terrorist networks. These global challenges can only be met by an expeditionary force that enables us to use the military not where we live, but where it is needed at any given moment.

"Our military provides housing, schools, childcare, healthcare and retirement for the more than two million servicemembers and civilians who have answered the call to defend our nation against these threats. And as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic we've seen firsthand how investments in our security are critical to public health and the global economy. Basic and applied research invigorates our academic and tech sectors and gives rise to technologies like the internet, GPS and life saving vaccines.

"Our defense is more than just the planes and ships we need to defend our nation, it's an investment in our security, our values and our progress. President Biden's approach to national security recognizes this and takes a clear-eyed approach as we continue striving toward a safer, more just world."
