Cortez Masto, Cornyn Introduce Bipartisan Legislation To Improve Access To High-quality Food On Military Bases

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) introduced bipartisan legislation to improve the quality and nutrition of food provided to service members on U.S. military installations. The Senators introduced this bill after hearing from members of the military and their families about the need to improve the accessibility of healthy and affordable meal options on U.S. bases.

"Our service members put their lives on the line to protect our nation and we need to make sure they can access affordable, nutritious food so they can stay healthy," said Senator Cortez Masto. "Soldiers should not have to rely on fast food because they can't find substantive meals in the mess hall, and this legislation will encourage the Department of Defense to upgrade food options on U.S. military bases for the men and women in our armed forces."

"Maintaining a healthy fighting force is as critical to military readiness as ensuring they are properly trained and equipped," said Senator Cornyn. "This bill will help us understand how to make sure our troops stay fit to fight and I'm proud to partner with Sen. Cortez Masto in introducing this important legislation."

This legislation would authorize a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on the quality and nutrition of food available at military installations for American service members. The legislation also calls for the GAO to make recommendations on how to improve access to high-quality food options provided by the Department of Defense for our men and women in uniform.
