Walberg Questions Granholm on Line 5 Pipeline, Energy Security

Press Release

Date: May 19, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Today, during a House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee hearing, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) pressed Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm about the Biden Administration's position on the continued operations of Line 5 in Michigan. In March, Walberg led a letter to President Biden about the consequences of shutting down Line 5 but has yet to receive a response. Click here to watch Walberg's questions at today's hearing.

"As we witnessed following the Colonial Pipeline cyberattack, even a temporary pipeline shutdown has a tremendous impact on a region's fuel supply and energy security. Yet the Whitmer Administration continues its misguided push for a permanent shut down of Line 5, which serves more than 50 percent of Michigan's propane needs," said Walberg. "Now is not the time to cause another regional--and possibly international--energy crisis by halting operations of a pipeline that we rely on each day. Despite Secretary Granholm's disappointing noncommittal answer today, I continue to call on the Biden Administration to support Line 5 and the affordable energy supply, good-paying jobs, and economic activity that it brings to Michigan."
