Hoeven: Constitution Vests Authority in States to Conduct Elections

Press Release

Date: June 22, 2021
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Elections

Senator John Hoeven today opposed legislation that would take away the authority of the states to conduct their own elections:

"The Constitution vests authority in the states to conduct elections. This bill takes away state authority and effectively nationalizes our election system. I don't believe North Dakotans want the federal government to determine how we conduct our elections. It would prevent states from enforcing commonsense Voter ID laws, while forcing states to allow ballot harvesting. At the same time, the bill would federally fund campaigns, giving political candidates taxpayer dollars. I believe states should run our elections, not be forced to use a one-size-fits-all federal approach."
