Rep. Schakowsky, Sens. Blumenthal & Booker Applaud Supreme Court Decision for NCAA Players

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over sports-related policy, and Senators Richard Blumenthal and Cory Booker, issued the following joint statement after the Supreme Court decided 9-0 in favor of college athletes in regards to pay and compensation:

"The Supreme Court's unanimous ruling in the NCAA vs. Alston case is a major step toward ending the NCAA's exploitative rules. The Court's decision and Justice Kavanaugh's concurring opinion are nothing less than a clear and resounding rebuke of the NCAA, and calls into legal question the entire system of profiteering on the backs of college athletes.

"This ruling points out grave deficiencies in the current state of college sports, but leaves several critical issues to be addressed. Congress must pass legislation that goes beyond compensation and gives athletes full rights to their Name, Image, and Likeness, along with enforceable health and safety standards, and improved educational opportunities for all college athletes. Anything less than comprehensive reform isn't putting the needs of the athletes first."

Blumenthal and Booker have introduced the College Athlete's Bill of Rights and Schakowsky will be introducing the House version later this summer.
