Joyce Criticizes Politicized Investigation into January 6th

Today, Congressman Dave Joyce (OH-14) issued the following statement on Speaker Pelosi's resolution to establish a select Congressional committee to investigate the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol:

"The select committee proposed by Speaker Pelosi will not remove the politics surrounding the attack on January 6th and provide the American people with the facts they need. Instead, it will serve as a platform for those who wish to further fan the partisan flames that were set ablaze that day. It's pretty simple: any legitimate investigation must be free of bias, cannot predetermine the outcome and must present factual evidence. That's why I supported a bipartisan, independent commission and voted against this partisan exercise. If Congress can't figure out how to rise above the political mudslinging, we will never understand how to fix the security failures that occurred that day and our Capitol Police officers will never get the answers they deserve."

Speaker Pelosi's proposed select committee would be politically skewed, with eight Democrats and five Republicans. All 13 Members of the committee would ultimately be picked by Speaker Pelosi herself and Democrats would have sole subpoena power. This is in stark contrast to the bipartisan, independent commission that Joyce voted in favor of in May which would have been comprised equally of five Republicans and five Democrats, none of whom could have been a government employee or official. Additionally, subpoenas would have required bipartisan agreement between the chair (appointed by the Speaker) and vice chair (jointly appointed by the House and Senate Minority Leaders), or a majority vote.
