Rosen Applauds $1.67 Million HHS Grant Awarded to the City of Las Vegas to Improve Health Literacy Among Underserved Populations

Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), released the following statement applauding news of a grant totaling $1,670,000 awarded to the City of Las Vegas. The grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) was given to Las Vegas to support efforts to improve health literacy to boost COVID-19 vaccinations and other mitigation practices.

"As communities across the country and Nevada re-open in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we must ensure Nevadans and all Americans have access to timely, accurate, and culturally competent information and resources to continue fighting COVID-19 and keep infection numbers low," said Senator Rosen. "We have made significant progress in containing the spread of COVID-19, but we must get more Nevadans vaccinated. Access to accurate vaccine safety information and public health mitigation measures are critical to keeping communities like Las Vegas healthy. This funding will help Nevada and other states across the country provide up-to-date and accurate information so we can continue to fight this pandemic together."

BACKGROUND: The Advancing Health Literacy (AHL) to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19 initiative is a $250 million grant program awarded to 73 local governments as part of a new, two-year initiative to identify and implement best practices for improving health literacy to enhance COVID-19 vaccination and other mitigation practices among underserved populations.

Around 44.8% of Nevada's population and 52.7% of Nevada's population over the age of 12 have had at least one vaccine dose.
