Rep. Bowman Statement on Senate-Amended Jan. 6 Emergency Security Supplemental

Rep. Jamaal Bowman issued the following statement regarding the House vote on the Senate-amended Jan. 6 emergency security supplemental:

"Yesterday, I voted no on the Senate version of the Jan. 6 emergency security supplemental. This version, among other changes, added another $30 million to Capitol Police funding. We were given under 30 minutes after receiving the new version before being asked to vote.

"As I've stated previously, we know that the attack on the Capitol was not due to a lack of police funding, but a lack of preparation and sharing of intelligence, and the unchecked spread of white supremacy encouraged by Donald Trump.

"Our response to crises cannot be adding more and more police funding. We need a holistic approach to public safety and a thorough investigation of those complicit in the attack -- including Republican members of Congress.

"This supplemental also included an increase in Afghan Special Immigrant Visas, an issue that deeply affects families in NY-16. It's unacceptable that this was included as part of a continuation of over-policing in our country, and it should have been voted on independently.

"This is why I am a strong supporter and co-sponsor of the ALLIES Act, which authorizes an additional 8,000 Afghan Special Immigrant Visas -- covering all potentially eligible applicants currently in the pipeline -- and makes additional improvements to the visas. The House voted on this bill earlier in July, and I voted yes."
