Congressman Brown: A Looming Eviction Crisis Calls For Action At Every Level of Government

Statement

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court conservative majority's decision to end the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) federal eviction moratorium:

"With COVID-19 infections again on the rise in communities across America due to the Delta variant, we need action from every level of government to help stave off a looming eviction crisis in our country. Hundreds of thousands of families are now at risk of losing their homes, risking public health and our economic recovery. Nothing is more important to the well-being of families and children than a stable home.

"In Congress, I stand ready to vote to extend the federal eviction moratorium and call on my Republican colleagues to end their opposition and put the needs of American families first. I urge Governor Hogan to immediately extend our state's now expired moratorium on evictions to protect working families and reiterate my call for state and local leaders to expedite the disbursement of federal funding through the American Rescue Plan's Emergency Rental Assistance program to support Marylanders in need. What we do in the next several weeks can mean the difference in families' lives."

Congressman Brown helped send $401 million dollars to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) through the American Rescue Plan. Congressman Brown is an original co-sponsor of the Protecting Renters from Evictions Act of 2021 which would extend the federal eviction moratorium through December 31, 2021.
