Meng and Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas Officially Open Disaster Recovery Center at Queens College

QUEENS, NY -- This afternoon, U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) and United States Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas officially opened a Disaster Recovery Center in her congressional district to help Queens residents, and other New Yorkers, who have been impacted by last week's rainfall and flooding caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

The facility, located on the campus of Queens College in Flushing, was formally launched today after Meng requested and strongly advocated for a Recovery Center in her district.

"I thank Secretary Mayorkas for coming to my district here in Queens to personally help open this Recovery Center, and to see some of the damage in-person," said Meng. "The destruction that Ida caused in our borough has been devastating. Constituents lost so much in this catastrophic storm and many have had their lives turned upside down. The federal government must be there to provide relief for those who desperately need assistance, and this new Disaster Recovery Center will be a vital resource in helping to make that happen. I thank and commend Secretary Mayorkas and his team for coming through, and providing my district with this much-needed facility, and for getting it up and running so quickly. Working together, we will help Queens residents get through this extremely difficult time."

Also in attendance at the opening were several state and city agencies and the American Red Cross.

The Disaster Recovery Center is housed in the college's Student Union at 152-45 Melbourne Avenue. It includes specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until further notice.
