Slotkin Statement on Biden Visit to Michigan's 8th District

Issues: Infrastructure

HOWELL, Mich. -- U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) released the following statement:

"It was good to welcome President Biden this afternoon to the Operating Engineers Local 324 training facility here in Howell to talk about how we rebuild Michigan's infrastructure for the 21st Century. The President knows we have some of the most skilled workers in the country right here in Michigan, including the Operating Engineers, who will be on the front lines of the hard work to rebuild our roads, bridges, and dams. It felt good to get this bill on the road (and out of Washington) so he can put names and faces to the proposed programs and help us get it done this month.

"In the ride from Lansing airport, I was frank with the President that my highest priority is for the bipartisan infrastructure bill to become law. Getting this bill signed will be hugely impactful for districts like mine. It will also create millions of good-paying union jobs -- prevailing wage jobs -- all over the country. This is a huge economic opportunity, and we have to get it done.

"I also told the President that the "human infrastructure' bill needs to be both transformative and targeted: transformative by expanding access to affordable child care for working families and letting Medicare negotiate for lower drug prices; and targeted by ensuring that the package is fully paid for, doesn't pass on more debt to our kids, and doesn't saddle working class families with the bill. These have been my criteria for this bill from the start and that's what I told the President this afternoon. I'm grateful for his leadership in getting us through what I hope is a few short weeks more of negotiations."
