Congresswoman Nikema Williams Introduces Resolution Commemorating National Nonviolence Week​​​

Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) alongside Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) introduced a resolution commemorating National Nonviolence Week, which occurs annually during the first week of October. During the 116th Congress, Congressman Ryan introduced the resolution with Congressman John Lewis.

The resolution raises awareness of youth violence, the need to become a more peaceful society, and the important role Georgia's Fifth Congressional District played in America's history of nonviolent social change. The resolution was introduced the same day the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the winners of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

"Now more than ever we should listen to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and my friend and predecessor John Lewis, both of whom were champions of nonviolence," said Congresswoman Williams. "Georgia's Fifth District will always be a source of inspiration to create a nonviolent world. I am proud to build off of that legacy and introduce this resolution with Congressman Ryan."

"National Nonviolence Week is an opportunity for our communities to promote values of peace, justice, and equality and to encourage the practice of nonviolence principles," said Congressman Ryan. "I commend this group of students for their relentless advocacy and devotion to peace and justice.
