Washington, D.C. -- Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) released the following statement encouraging high school seniors across Ohio's 9th Congressional District to submit an application to be considered for nomination to attend one of the U.S. Service Academies.

Each year, Rep. Kaptur nominates a select number of high school seniors to attend the nation's prestigious Service Academies. This year, students who are interested in attending the Military Academy in West Point, NY, the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, the Air Force Academy in Coloradio Springs, CO, or the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY, must complete an application and submit materials to Rep. Kaptur's office by Monday, November 1, 2021 at 12:00pm EST. After submission, applicants will be notified if they are eligible to advance in the process.

The Services Academies provide young people a world-class, tuition-free education that will prepare them for service in defense of the nation. While attending a Service Academy is a rewarding experience -- the decision to enroll should be considered carefully. Over the course of nearly four years, students will live in a highly controlled, fully immersive environment in which their physical and mental capabilities will be rigorously tested.

Upon graduating from the Military, Naval, or Air Force Academies, students receive a military commission and are required to serve five years on active duty and three years in the reserves. Graduates of the Merchant Marine Academy must obtain employment in the private or public maritime sector for five years, or serve eight years in the reserves.

"The Services Academies provide a phenomenal opportunity for young people to receive a world-class education, and begin a rewarding career in service to our nation," said Rep. Kaptur. "We are incredibly proud of the students we have nominated in the past, and look forward to supporting our region's next generation of leaders."
