Durbin Honors Senate Tenure Of Patrick Leahy

U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today paid tribute to Senator Patrick Leahy's (D-VT) tenure in the Senate following Leahy's announcement that he would not seek reelection in 2022. During his floor speech, Durbin spoke about his friendship with Leahy and thanked him for his leadership in the Senate, particularly on human rights.

"I've come to know Pat in my time in the Senate. He is a humanitarian. He is a gifted lawmaker, and a passionate defender of America's national ideals. And, I might add, human rights," Durbin said. "I certainly realized when Senator Leahy was the chair of that committee [Senate Judiciary Committee], he wrote an extraordinary record which many of us only dream of emulating. I thank him for his passionate, consistent, faithful support of the Dream Act, which I introduced 20 years ago and every effort on his part to help me enact it into law."

"His service in this Senate has been a great benefit to our nation and our world, and his beloved state of Vermont," Durbin concluded.
