Granholm Proclaims Week of March 5 "Lifeline Week" in Michigan

Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today proclaimed the week of March 5-11 "Lifeline Week" in Michigan. The Lifeline assistance program, established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), provides monthly discounts on telephone bills for low-income customers.

The FCC and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) have launched "Lifeline Across America," a nationwide program to draw more low-income customers into the federal and state Lifeline programs. Currently, there are less than 150,000 Michigan telephone customers enrolled in the Lifeline program.

"Telephone service has become a necessity in today's world," said Granholm. "Because of Lifeline Across America, we can ensure that all of our citizens stay connected and don't have to worry about being out of touch."

Eligible customers should contact their local telephone provider to apply. For information about Lifeline, visit the Michigan Public Service Commission website at www.michigan.gov/mpsc
