KILDEE APPLAUDS PASSAGE OF BILL TO SAFEGUARD AND STRENGTHEN OUR DEMOCRACY

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today applauded the passage of the Protecting Our Democracy Act to safeguard and strengthen our democracy. This legislation would restore the accountability and transparency of our institutions so the American people can have confidence in our government's ability to address the challenges we face.

"Ensuring the government works for the people is one of my top priorities in Congress. This legislation will ensure accountability, ethics and integrity in government and ensure that no president or elected official, regardless of political party, is above the law or free from oversight. I am proud to support this legislation to enhance transparency in government and restore the constitutional system of checks and balances envisioned by our Founding Fathers," said Congressman Kildee.

The Protecting Our Democracy Act will reassert Congress's role as a co-equal branch of government by addressing the vulnerabilities exploited by the former president and his enablers to weaken our democracy, undermine the rule of law and subvert the system of checks and balances enshrined by the framers of the U.S. Constitution. It does so by:

Preventing presidential abuses: ensures pardon power cannot be abused, ensures presidents are not above the law, deterring corruption and foreign interference and fighting personal self-enrichment.

Restoring our system of checks and balances and strengthening accountability in government: enforcing Congress's subpoena power and power of the purse, strengthening congressional oversight of emergency declarations, protects the U.S. Department of Justice from political meddling from any White House, prevents public servants from engaging in partisan activity, protects whistleblowers and the independence of Inspectors General, restores transparency to the White House including with transparency in tax returns and helps ensure a smooth presidential transition.

Protecting our elections: preventing foreign interference in elections and bolstering public confidence in our democratic institutions.
