Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) Statement on Anniversary of January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol

Statement

Date: Jan. 6, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) today released the following statement on the first anniversary of the violent January 6th, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol:

"One year ago, America witnessed a shameful attack on our democracy. On January 6th, a mob of violent insurrectionists wreaked havoc resulting in injuries, including multiple deaths, at the United States Capitol -- with the sole purpose of undermining the election process using violence. The January 6th anniversary signifies a day that wasn't just an attack on our Capitol, but a direct assault on our democracy, the peaceful transition of power, and our fair electoral system.

"One year later, the scars of that deadly day are still felt by the United States Capitol Police, lawmakers, staff members, and countless others. The best way to honor the bravery of those who risked and lost their lives on that day is through action. That is why today, Congress must advance legislation to protect our democracy and the sacred right to vote -- because we can't allow the selfless sacrifices that our brave Capitol Police officers and so many others made on January 6th to be in vain.

"The January 6th attack is part of a broader effort that, unfortunately, seeks to undercut our democracy and our electoral system. Republican-led state legislatures across the country continue to escalate the former president's 'Big Lie' about widespread voter fraud by enacting hundreds of new election restrictions. If we do not advance comprehensive voting rights protection legislation that addresses these threats to our democracy in the U.S. Senate, these bogus "election integrity' efforts will restrict access to the ballot for minority and vulnerable communities across the country.

"This cannot be the new norm in our country. The right to vote is intertwined in the fabric of our nation. The House has already done its job to pass legislation that will protect our democracy and sacred right to vote. The Senate must follow our lead and consider changes to parliamentary rules as soon as possible to fortify the right to vote as a way to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country on that deadly day."
